Fascia

The vertical board running along the lower edge of a roof, where gutters attach.

The fascia is the long, flat board that runs horizontally along the lower edge of your roof — the visible vertical surface you see from the ground at the eaves. Gutters attach to it.

What goes wrong

  • Wind damage: lifted shingles can tear into the fascia.
  • Hail dents on aluminum-wrapped fascia, especially on south- and west-facing exposures.
  • Water damage: if shingles or drip edge fail above, water rots the fascia from behind.

When estimating

A storm-damage claim that includes shingle replacement should generally include fascia inspection and, where damage is found, replacement of the wrap or board. If your Statement of Loss doesn't mention fascia, ask your contractor whether it should be supplemented.
