The soffit is the horizontal surface tucked under the overhanging edge of the roof. It's typically perforated or vented to allow air to circulate into the attic — a critical part of the home's ventilation system.
Storm damage to look for
- Wind-blown panels — high winds can pull soffit panels loose; a missing or torn panel is hard to miss from below.
- Pest intrusion — once soffit is breached, squirrels and birds get into the attic.
- Hidden water staining indicating roof leaks above.
Why it matters on the claim
Damaged soffit is a normal, expected line item on a storm-damage Statement of Loss. If yours is missing it but your contractor sees damage, ask them to document and submit a supplement.
