Soffit

The underside surface of the roof overhang. Vented to let attic air circulate.

The soffit is the horizontal surface tucked under the overhanging edge of the roof. It's typically perforated or vented to allow air to circulate into the attic — a critical part of the home's ventilation system.

Storm damage to look for

  • Wind-blown panels — high winds can pull soffit panels loose; a missing or torn panel is hard to miss from below.
  • Pest intrusion — once soffit is breached, squirrels and birds get into the attic.
  • Hidden water staining indicating roof leaks above.

Why it matters on the claim

Damaged soffit is a normal, expected line item on a storm-damage Statement of Loss. If yours is missing it but your contractor sees damage, ask them to document and submit a supplement.
